NAS Jacksonville is one of the two advanced naval bases placed in Duval County. Although it is seen like a military base, it is actually a military airport. It is only 6 km away from the Jacksonville business district. This is the second base in size in the southern part of the United States and also the third one in the country. It is one of the bases with the fastest growth rate over the years. The main purpose of this camp is to train some of the best pilots in the world, not to mention about various techniques and technologies used in the anti submarine warfare for the United States and all the allied countries.
About NAS Jacksonville
Naval Air Station Jacksonville or NAS Jacksonville is a military airport located four miles (6 km) south of the central business district of Jacksonville, in Duval County, Florida, United States. Today, 23,000 civilian and active-duty personnel are employed on the base. The installation is considered to be one of the hubs for naval activity in the U.S. South. In addition to the many operational squadrons aboard, NAS Jacksonville is home to Patrol Squadron Thirty (VP-30), the Navy's largest aviation squadron and the only P-3C "Orion" Fleet Replacement Squadron that prepares and trains U.S. and NATO/Allied pilots, air crew and maintenance personnel for further operational assignments. NAS Jacksonville is also an Aviation Maintenance training facility for several aviation rates, facilitated by Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Jacksonville.
NAS Mayport Naval Station is a major U.S. Navy base in northern Duval County, located near the Port of Jacksonville in northeast Florida on the south side of the St. Johns River just inside the entrance jetties and westward of St. Johns Point. Naval Station Mayport is a major U.S. Navy base. It contains a military airfield (Adm. David L. McDonald Field) with one asphalt paved runway. Since its commissioning in December 1942, NS Mayport has grown to become the third largest fleet concentration area in the United States. Naval Station Mayport is home to the Navy's reactivated United States 4th Fleet, which had been deactivated since the 1950's.
About NAS Mayport
Mayport is not just one of the most advanced military bases in the United States Navy, but also one of the most prolific facilities in the entire country. The station is operated by the US Navy and commanded by Captain Douglas F. Cochrane. One of the definitive factors that place it above its “competition” is the local airfield, which is named in the memory of David L. McDonald. It has a long runway – around 2,500 meters – that is entirely paved with asphalt. Almost eight decades of experience got this facility where it is today. It is the third largest and most important base in the United States of America if you judge by the concentration of ships. In fact, the base can easily host around 35 ships, not to mention about its local airfield with a runway that can support absolutely any aircraft out there. The base is located in Jacksonville, in the northeastern part of Florida. There are three such installations in Jacksonville, but NS Mayport is the most important one. The excellent location is the reason for so many bases concentrated in the area.
