Most Consumers Expect More from Technology

What people want most from their smartphones, tablets, home theater and home appliances is simplicity, according to the new Ketchum Digital Living Index, conducted by global communications firm Ketchum. The study showed that 76 percent of consumers said they are not very satisfied with technology's ability to make their life simpler. Responses from 6,000 consumers in six countries revealed more prefer technology to be easy to use (54 percent) and simplify their life (46 percent) than entertain them (35 percent) or signal who they are to the world (11 percent).

"The most surprising finding in the study is the overwhelming desire for simplification. It seems counter-intuitive when technology is always about being bigger or better or faster, but the data show that what people really want is to understand how all of these devices can get them to their desired experience easily," said Esty Pujadas, partner and director of Ketchum's Global Technology Practice.

This is particularly true considering that the sheer volume and pace at which new technologies are brought to market can make it hard for people to keep up.

The Index reveals that there are four kinds of Digital Living natives:

Enthusiasts (37 percent of the study's global population), who are passionate about technology and willing to sacrifice simplification for empowerment.

Infomaniacs (25 percent), who value getting information and discovering new experiences even more than relating better to other people.

Pragmatists (22 percent) are less likely to love technology, but value it as very helpful in relating better to others, getting things done, and managing health and wellness.

Disconnects (16 percent) are noticeably unemotional about technology; they place a high value on simplification instead of empowerment or enrichment.

Both the expectation for home prices and the percentage of those who think the U.S. economy is on the right path reached record highs in Fannie Mae's April 2012 National Housing Survey.

ericans continue to expect home prices to go up, with the projection averaging 1.3 percent over the next 12 months, the highest value recorded.

A high percentage of Americans still say it is a good time to buy while the percentage who said it is a good time to sell was 15 percent, a 1 point increase from March.

Doug Duncan, Fannie Mae chief economist, mentioned the recent figures on employment in April, which showed a decline in job growth.

The expectation for average rental prices decreased slightly to 3.6 percent; in March, respondents expected rent to go up by 4.1 percent over the next 12 months.

If respondents were to move, 32 percent said say they would rent while 64 percent said they would buy. The percentFromage of those who said they would rent increased 2 points and reached the highest level since November 2011.

The percentage of Americans who believe the economy is on the right track rose to 37 percent, a 2 point increase from the previous month and the highest level in the surveys two-year history. Still, an even greater 56 percent believe the economy is moving in the wrong direction.

Also, 23 percent of Americans reported their household income is significantly higher than it was a year ago, while 36 percent said their household expenses are significantly higher since the same time period. Both categories rose 2 percentage points compared to March.

The percentage of those who think their financial situation will decline was unchanged from the previous two months at 12 percent, the lowest value recorded in over a year.

The Fannie Mae survey polled a nationally representative sample of 1,000 respondents aged 18 and older between April 4, 2011 and April 27, 2012.

Here's something I saw on the Florida Trend daily news awhile back but wanted to pass along to you -  from the South Florida Sun Sentinel: Florida women pay extra for health coverage - Health insurance costs Florida women as much as 52 percent more than men up to $1,141 more on average each year because of a gender gap that has existed for decades, a report said Monday. And that doesn't include the extra cost of maternity coverage. Florida is one of 39 states that allow insurers to charge different rates based on gender. [Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel]

Home Staging Secrets: The Kitchen
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL, Apr 04, 2012The kitchen is one of the hottest selling points for any listing, as it is the center for a lot of activity within a home. While you may renovate your kitchen before selling or at least replace outdated appliances and add some fresh paint, staging is another crucial part of making your kitchen buyer-ready. Here are some important tips for staging your kitchen.

Make it sparkle. Cleaning your kitchen top to bottom is the first step in home staging.  Polish all fixtures, clean out the inside of the stove, dust that ceiling fan, wash windows, scrub your baseboards, clean cabinets and polish or replace knobs and handles.

De-clutter. Remove all appliances from the counter, take magnets and photos off the fridge and most of the photos off the wall. Don't remove everything, or it will look cold and unlived in. Instead, allow an opportunity for the buyer to imagine their own lives enfolding in the room.

Make use of space and color. Replace your large kitchen table with a smaller one to make the space seem roomier. Replace heavy drapes with lighter ones to brighten the room. Make sure your color scheme is subtle and complimentary, not extreme or jarring. The less things shoved into your space, the larger it will look. Put something simple, like a cookbook or bowl of fruit on the counter or kitchen table.

Sweat the small stuff. Go above and beyond to make your kitchen look like a place where your potential buyers will want to spend time. Try not to cook anything with a strong odor in your kitchen during the time your house is on the market, like fish, bacon or curry. Of course, baking some fresh bread has always been a go-to home selling secret. Also, be sure never to leave any dirty dishes in the sink or the dishwasher. Sellers like to open things, and your dishwasher is not excluded from this. Dont turn them off with last nights dinner dishes.

I hope this information will be helpful to you!

It's another beautiful day here in northeast Florida!  Just a reminder, though, we're only a couple of months from the beginning of the 2012 hurricane season.  Just FYI, the hurricane team at Colorado State University, William Gray and Philip Klotzbach, are forecasting a quieter hurricane season this year.  They base their analysis on the belief that this year's La Nina, which is already fading and expected to end in May, will give way to El Nino conditions in summer and fall.  For the Florida peninsula, much of our fate depends on where the Atlantic high pressure system sets up shop.  To get more information, check it out here:  Quieter Hurricane Season Ahead?

Good news for Florida tourism!  SeaWorld Parks&Entertainment, the Orlando-based owner of 10 theme parks across the country, appears to have rebounded from a two-year slump.  The company's top executive told the Orlando Sentinel on Tuesday that attendance across the chain climbed 5.3 percent in 2011 - to about 23.6 million visitors in all.  It's the company's first year-over-year increase since 2008!
